Shocking Threat to Democracy: CA GOP Congressman Condemns Newsom's Redistricting Plan

(INSIDE CALIFORNIA POLITICS) — Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) criticized Governor Gavin Newsom's proposal to redraw congressional districts in California during this week's episode of Inside California Politics.

Several Republican legislators, including Rep. Kiley, may have an uncertain future if Gov. Newsom's proposal is implemented. On Thursday, Newsom proposed a special election in November to establish new U.S. House districts that would benefit Democrats. These maps require voter approval since an independent commission is responsible for their creation. This move directly addresses President Donald Trump's urging of Texas lawmakers to increase Republican representation before the 2026 election.

What's happening right now is one of the most shocking threats to democracy we've ever witnessed in this state, and you don't have to believe me on that," Kiley stated. "There was apoll out from PoliticoJust today, it was stated that voters support maintaining our independent redistricting commission by a margin of two to one. More than 60% of Democrats, more than 60% of Republicans, and over 70% of Independents are against Governor Newsom's plan, yet they continue moving ahead with it.

Kiley claims that Democrats are attempting to draft the ballot language in a way that could lead Californians to approve a measure without realizing they are doing so.

"That's their whole plan, which is to deceive voters, since it was the voters who established this commission and have clearly indicated they want it to remain in place," Kiley stated.

Kiley won re-election for California's 3rd Congressional District in the previous year, beating Democrat Jessica Morse with an 11 percent margin. His district covers all or portions of Inyo, Sacramento, Mono, Alpine, El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Sierra, Yuba, and Plumas counties. When questioned about his concerns regarding his position, Kiley expressed continued confidence in his capacity to serve individuals from any political background.

I concentrated on matters such as preserving Lake Tahoe, reducing traffic in my region, and providing assistance to residents," Kiley stated. "Therefore, if [Democrats] attempt to challenge me in any manner, I'm not overly worried about my own position initially.

A Republican legislator has proposed a bill to prohibit redistricting during the middle of the decade, although the measure is expected to encounter significant challenges in Congress. Kiley mentioned to host Nikki Laurenzo that his legislation is unrelated to events happening nationally or in any other state.

We perform redistricting at the start of each decade following the census to account for updated population figures. And indeed, individuals engage in political maneuvering during this process, which is where gerrymandering occurs," Kiley stated. "However, when it's done in the middle of the decade without any new census data, the entire process is solely motivated by partisanship. That is fundamentally incorrect.
