Animals Face the Scales at Zoo's Annual Weigh-In

Lions, penguins, and hippos have been some of the animals participating in the zoo's yearly weighing event.

The Whipsnade Zoo located in Bedfordshire will be exchanging details about their animals with zoo professionals around the globe.

Employees had to employ clever methods to measure every animal, ranging from small woodlice to large camels.

One of the creatures was lured towards the scales by a small amount of marmite.

Sarah Forsyth, the mammal curator at Whipsnade, stated: "We monitor the weight of all the animals consistently throughout the year to ensure their well-being, but the yearly weighing provides a chance to confirm that the global records are current."

Over 11,000 creatures reside at Whipsnade.

Getting the animals to step onto the scales occasionally requires some creative methods, like letting the northern rockhopper penguins have a fishy breakfast, or offering the pygmy hippo a bit of his favorite marmite.

A group consisting of three adult lions and seven young ones, the pride from Whipsnade Zoo, stood in a queue for the weighing scale.

Ms. Forsyth stated, "Clearly, getting seven cubs to step on a scale is difficult, but it helps us track their development."

At their current age, everything seems thrilling, making it quite difficult for the caretakers to keep them still, but they are putting in the effort and will succeed.

Kim Burton, a senior zookeeper, was in charge of measuring the height and weight of Tapon, a 20-year-old pygmy hippopotamus.

He stated, "He's a cheerful young boy, weighing around 280kg - 260 is the optimal weight, so he's somewhat overweight, but it's preferable to being underweight - I'll modify his diet accordingly."

His colleague George Spooner was measuring aBactrian camel familywhich featured Ivor, a three-month-old infant who could not settle down.

Mr. Spooner stated, "We've been collaborating with him since he was a month old, so he's still in the process of understanding the basics and is gradually improving."

He doesn't perform it as well as his sister Sally did last year.
