BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The relatives of a man who died in Birminghamhas inquiries regarding why the man was accused of shooting their brotherwas incorrectly let out of prison on bail last week.
The individual, Terence Alexander, has been taken into custody again. Alexander is charged with shooting and killing 31-year-old Taevon Arnold and causing injury to another woman on 14th Street North near 1st Avenue North.
Law enforcement detained Alexander within 24 hours of the incident, yet shortly afterward, a mistake in paperwork led to his release on bail from prison.
"When they arrested someone, I felt somewhat relieved, but you know, we still have questions, like why?" said Diona Arnold, the victim's sister.
Diona Arnold mentions that she first felt a sense of relief when the police detained Alexander, but soon was surprised to find out he had been set free. She still can't comprehend how such a significant mistake occurred.
"When I saw that he left, I was thinking - how? How could this happen? By making that error, anything could have occurred in those 24 hours, and he was gone," she said.
Officials have re-arrested Alexander. On Monday, a judge refused to grant him bail under Aniah’s Law for the incident that resulted in Arnold's death and another woman being injured.
Arnold mentions that the family still thinks about their brother daily.
"I pray each day that the system doesn't let us down once more, as it somewhat let us down the first time. I just hope everything proceeds as planned. His family has always loved and cared for him. We were there to support him during his life, so we will definitely be there to support him now that he has passed," said Diona Arnold.
Alexander is currently held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. He was previously on probation for drug-related offenses, but recent court documents indicate that the new homicide charge has led to the revocation of his probation. A hearing regarding this issue is anticipated in the near future.
