Numerous locals went out looking for explanations following a town meeting in Dowagiac.
Michigan voters hoping to express worries about President Trump's Large and Stunning Bill and its potential effects on them.
Representative Tim Walberg of the Fifth Congressional District, who supports the bill, was absent from the event on Wednesday night.
"What it indicates is that he isn't working for us, and that's who he should be working for—the people who elected him—and if he can't do that, then we will vote him out of office," said Cathy Bazata, a resident of Edwardsburg.
A key concern for attendees was the effect of budget reductions on healthcare, particularly in regions such as Dowagiac.
"My insurance costs will increase. I'm not sure how this benefits me as a senior citizen. I don't see how it helps people with low incomes or middle-income individuals who work, but their employer doesn't provide coverage, and now when they try to get health care through the marketplace, their premiums will be much higher," said Naomi Ludman from the Coalition for Democracy.
Medicaid was just one of several factors that raised concerns among local hospital officials, who were worried that losing funding might lead to its closure or an inability to deliver quality care.
"You observe the changes occurring in rural healthcare across the country, the hospital closures that are taking place, and when you examine the large, impressive Bill, it ends up reducing funding for rural hospitals more severely than almost anyone else," said Curtis Hertel, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.
Every question asked during tonight's gathering will be forwarded to the congressman.
WSBT 22 contacted Walberg to get his perspective on the communities' concerns.
The response from his office stated that he was unable to attend the town meeting.
