Resident's Photo of New Rail Station Sparks Outrage: 'It Should Be Banned'

Ads are all around us. From browsing social media topumping your gasor traveling along the street, it's difficult to avoid companies and the products they attempt to promote to us.

A person from Australia posted on r/sydney to share aphotoof a new promotional display, and other Australians were unhappy.

"It was unavoidable. Advertisements are set to arrive at a Sydney metro soon," the user states, sharing a picture of a light board expected to display a large advertisement in the near future.

Last year, Sydney Metro announcedthe introduction of digital displays throughout its stations. Although this adjustment has caused dissatisfaction for some, it is not unexpected for individuals in various locations around the globe.

The flood of advertisements indicates a marketing strategy centered around excessive consumption. Some companies have made significant efforts to promote themselves, such as Capital One with a fewmassive blimpssent across the sky. Another individual came across a cellphone provider advertisement inside theirfortune cookie.

Too many advertisements not only become visual nuisances and encourage people to keep buying, leading to waste. A studycoveredA study by Harvard Business Review indicated that although advertisements are designed to inform us about products and influence our purchasing decisions, they can ultimately lead to decreased happiness.

"Another perspective … suggests that bombarding individuals with extensive advertising increases their ambitions — and leads them to believe that their lives, accomplishments, possessions, and experiences fall short," noted Andrew Oswald from the University of Warwick, who was involved in the research.

Users responded to the changes, expressing their disappointment about the circumstances.

"Why do they have to ruin a public space, which is essentially beautiful art, with gross advertisements," one usersaid.

Another referenced advertising-free places, saying, "Public space advertising should be prohibited, similar to Sao Paulo."

If constant advertising irritates you as it does these people, consider exploringzero-waste movements, which can help you reduce your purchases, preventing items from being manufactured and ultimately discarded in landfills.
