Surreal Alien Broadcasts Now on Steam After 1-Bit Console Origins

Playdate recently acquired an unusual accessory known as Blippo Plus. This device transforms the handheld console into a peculiar little television, making the act of turning the crank resemble adjusting the dial on a traditional analog TV. Occasionally, you might come across a cryptic animation, or alternatively, a live-action musical performance. Some channels display a mysterious static logo, while others could present an elaborate variety show. Everything unfolds in real time, so you can't skip ahead or go back. You're simply required to watch it as it is.ye olde TV.

It's somewhat similar to public access television, but even more unusual. I suppose that was the atmosphere Tim and Eric aimed for, but Playdate takes a more dreamlike and bizarre approach, which is significantly enhanced by the Playdate's 1-bit screen.

The transmissions in Blippo Plus originate from Planet Blip, which means much of it could appear confusing to viewers unfamiliar with the norms of extraterrestrial pop culture. A key part of the enjoyment of Blippo Plus is drawing links between the various channels and starting to grasp the mysterious methods of aliens, although it's also filled with allusions to actual broadcasting history. For those into hypnagogic experiences, the atmosphere evokes theold and noisy James Ferraro albums(although it is actually YACHT providing the soundtrack).

This strange game, designed for a peculiar console, is heading to PC, and as you might anticipate from software transitioning from a crank-controlled 1-bit device to larger displays, it's likely to offer a different experience. Firstly, it features color, allowing the studio to embrace more intense CRT aesthetics. Additionally, there's a program guide, which I don't believe is present in the Playdate version, although channels continue to broadcast regardless of whether you're watching or not.

Blippo Plus is a joint effort between Telefantasy Studios, a California-based company focused on "the essence of late-night cable television," and Noble Robot, which is developing the '00s desktop simulation.Dreamsettler. Dustin Mierau, a veteran of Playdate, is also involved. Naturally, Blippo Plus is published by Panic, the creator of Playdate, who also released Untitled Goose Game and Thank Goodness You're Here! It will be available on Steam and Nintendo Switch on September 24.
