Miracles in the Ruins: Gaza Biennale Unveiled in Greece

The Gaza Biennial serves as a key stage for resistance and global support, highlighting the current art landscape in Gaza.

The Greek Pavilion at the Biennale is titled "In the Zone of Fire. Miracles in the Ruins" and is currently being exhibited at the Hill Art Project in Kipseli, a northern suburb of Athens.

It showcases 30 artists from the conflict zone who are presenting their work in Greece for the first time, highlighting that culture remains the final barrier of protection for the Palestinian community.

The Biennale is taking place in 14 cities globally (such as New York, London, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Valencia), marking the first significant platform for young Palestinian artists.

The Greek Pavilion has chosen notable works that reflect artistic and political innovation, aiming to stimulate discussions about the challenges of creating art in Gaza currently, while also uniting the artistic community in support of justice.

Modern Palestinian art fights for cultural endurance and becomes a symbol of defiance, merging heritage with creativity despite the most extreme conditions. Using mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, and video art, artists from Gaza convert suffering into verse, distress into recollection, and absence into a tool for authenticity.

The following artists are involved in the exhibition: Ahmed Adnan, Ahmad Aladawi, Ahmad Muhanna, Alaa Abu Saif, Alaà Al Shawa, Ashraf Sahwiel, Aya Juha, Bassel Aklouk, Diana Alhosary, Emad Badwan, Fadel Tafesh, Hala Eid Alnaji, Jehad Jarbou, Ghanem Al Den, Ibrahim Al Sultan, Khaled Hussein, Lamis Dajani Shawwa, Liza Madi, Maisara Baroud, Mary Ann Jaraisy, Maysa Yousef, Motaz Naim, Osama Naqqa Hussein, Rasha Alrayes, Ruba Mahmoud Hassan, Ola Al Sharif, Sohail Salem, Yasmeen Al Daya, Yahya Alsholy, Yara Zuhod.

The showcase is organized by Faye Tzanetoulakou and Dimitris Sarafianos. The arrangement of the Biennale receives backing from a collective of artists and curators based in Gaza along with the Forbidden Museum located on Al Risan Hill, Palestine.

In a statement, the organizers mentioned that the artworks on display were created by artists who have experienced the most terrible atrocities of humanity.

Despite numerous obstacles, creators have continued to produce, facing extreme hardships and producing pieces that highlight the importance of art in our lives and its role in our existence as a species.

As part of the exhibition, there will be several discussions led by artists participating from Gaza, along with a connection to the upcoming launch of the Turkish Pavilion for the Gaza Biennale, which is included in the Istanbul International Biennale.

Sohail Salem's "Diary in the Time of Genocide" will also be showcased, provided by the English Pavilion of the Gaza Biennial.
