Poland Detains Belarusian and Ukrainian Nationals in Warsaw Drone Incident

Polish officials stated that the two individuals arrested for operating a drone near government structures in Warsaw on Monday evening were nationals from Belarus and Ukraine.

The unmanned aerial vehicle — observed flying above the Belvedere presidential palace in Warsaw, the capital — was disabled by the Polish State Protection Services.

Two individuals, a 21-year-old Ukrainian man and a 17-year-old Belarusian woman, are under investigation, as reported by officials. Law enforcement is currently conducting searches at their residences and confirming their identities, along with checking if they hold valid legal residency permits in Poland.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk first posted on X on Monday evening stating that "two individuals from Belarus" had been arrested.

It remains uncertain if or why the original information was wrong, although the State Protection Services mentioned that the police questioned the suspects throughout the night.

"We reject the claims that this constitutes a large-scale espionage operation," stated Jacek Dobrzynski, a representative from the minister responsible for overseeing special services, during a press conference on Tuesday morning.

"Those are young individuals, maybe it was because of carelessness, maybe lack of knowledge, or perhaps they aimed to produce a movie," he further mentioned.

Poland is under heightened security measures following several Russian drones entering the nation last week, which European officials have termed a deliberate act of provocation.

The invasion — which occurred amid continuous Russian attacks on Ukraine and included several drones designed by Tehran and manufactured by Russia, known as Shahed-type drones — intensified long-standing concerns that Moscow's over three-year war in Ukraine might lead to a broader conflict. NATO deployed fighter jets to intercept the drones.
