CNN commentator Scott Jennings roasted Democratic operative Julie Roginsky, indicating that he is unaware of her occupation.
On Wednesday’s edition of CNN NewsNight, the panel talked about the PresidentDonald Trump’sdeployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., which Jennings strongly supportedsupports. The president has stated that crime in the nation's capital is so beyond control that federal intervention is necessary. This includes Trump assuming control of the Metropolitan Police Department under theD.C. Home Rule Act, which enables the president to do so for 30 days in times of emergencies, unless Congress decides to prolong that period.
I believe in Washington, D.C., you'll need significant decreases in violence, major drops in murder rates, and notable reductions in carjackings, so people will generally feel safe walking around without constantly fearing for their lives," Jennings stated. "Will it be completely resolved in 30 days? Likely not, but they're already making meaningful progress. They've made more than 100 arrests since August 7th, when he first raised this issue.
Roginsky brought up the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Since Trump sent soldiers and extra federal law enforcement to D.C. under the excuse of combating crime, Democrats have pointed out that Trump refused to activate the National Guard as the Capitol was being attacked that day. The president "gleefullywatched the violence unfold on television, as stated by Trump's former White House communications director.
"I suppose I'm old enough, Scott, to recall when you were shocked, like the rest of us, on January 6th when he wouldn't—" Roginsky started before Jennings cut in.
"Since January 6th occurred, shouldn't we still uphold the law today?" asked Jennings, an advisor to Senator.Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Here is the rest of their exchange:
ROGINSKY: Excuse me.
JENNINGS: Are you interested in murders today? January 6 means no enforcement of–
ROGINSKY: No.
JENNINGS: This is a foolish debate.
ROGINSKY: Let me conclude before you bring up a trivial debate.
[CROSSTALK]
ROGINSKY: Foolish is you sitting down with Mitch McConnellover Chick-fil-Aand regretting how Donald Trump was putting all of you, including Mitch McConnell, at risk. But I suppose now you're–
JENNINGS: I wasn't in danger. I was in Louisville.
ROGINSKY: No, no, you're the boss, your friend Mitch McConnell certainly was. But you know–
JENNINGS: The 6th of January was a difficult day.
ROGINSKY: Can I finish?
JENNINGS: Crimes involving killing are also undesirable.
ROGINSKY: May I, may I conclude?
ABBY PHILLIP: Scott, could you let her complete her thought?
JENNINGS: She wishes to come here and criticize me, but I won't permit it.
ROGINSKY: Scott, Scott–
JENNINGS: It's a foolish debate and I won't permit it.
PHILLIP: Scott, just let her complete it.
ROGINSKY: Scott, I am aware that you are-
PHILLIP: I'm not even sure we've heard the argument yet.
[CROSSTALK]
ROGINSKY: Scott, I know you're eager for that seat, but let me finish.
JENNINGS: Once more, you permit this every night. You let it happen every day.
PHILLIP: Let's just allow her to complete, if you don't mind.
ROGINSKY: Listen, I'm aware you have-
[CROSSTALK]
JENNINGS: What are you longing for? A sense of significance around here?
ROGINSKY: Well, no, actually, Scott, I'm quite-
JENNINGS: I mean, I don't have a clue what your job is.
ROGINSKY: Seriously? I vote for many Democrats. But let me complete my point, if I may. Can I just conclude what I was about to say, which is that on January 6th, [Trump] had the option to send in the National Guard. He decided against it. Now, today, because of someone called Big Ballsgot beat up, reportedly, he wants to send the National Guard to an area that has experienced a 30-year low in crime. And we all understand that he's doing this for political gain. He could have taken this action when this district was truly at risk on January 6th. But he didn't. And I find that very troubling. He claims to support law enforcement. He talks about backing the police. But he didn't care, Scott. Andyou agreed, back on January 6, he didn't care about the police officers or the safety of people in Washington, D.C. Now, because he's seeking to seize power, he's proceeding with this despite the fact that all the data indicates that Washington, D.C. hasn't become safer over the past 30 years.
Shortly after assuming power on January 20 for his second term, Trumppardonedapproximately 1,500 individuals involved in the attack on the Capitol.
