Occasionally — it's best not to alter something that's already working well.

What action would you take if your father insisted you obtain an individual cell phone plan rather than remain on the family plan? Would you comply, or would you try to convince him that the family plan is more cost-effective for everyone?

Phoney Business

Background: I remained on my parents' family phone plan even after becoming an adult.

My father enjoyed taking the majority of the data plan and would send a passive-aggressive "oink oink, the pig goes" if anyone other than him was using excessive data.

The majority of us needed to connect to WiFi whenever we could.

We all better have had a solid reason if we approached using up a quarter of the shared data plan (four people on the plan splitting it equally, but he preferred to take his portion from the middle).

Interestingly, the family divided this plan evenly.

We all contributed to the plan monthly, and theoretically, it was more affordable than a personal plan.

Story: On my birthday, he declared that I was being removed from the family plan because I needed to "act like an adult" or some other childish reasoning. I believe he might have also said something about how he disliked that my adult relatives were doing the same thing and needed to mature.

The details are unclear, but this wasn't the first time, nor the last, that he would make unwelcome announcements at birthdays and holiday family events, so I handled it calmly and moved to an independent phone plan.

So, the son stepped up.

I selected the most affordable, minimal data plan and it turned out to be similar in cost to what I was paying for the family plan.

I also came to understand how minimal my data usage really was, and the plan ended up being quite suitable for my requirements, so I decided to stay with it.

A year later, an unexpected event occurred.

Fallout: A year later, he suggests bringing me back into the family plan because removing me from it not only increased the individual's expenses per person, but the phone carrier also had a promotion where the more people on a single plan, the lower the cost per person would be. It was likely a bulk or group discount.

I informed him that I was completely satisfied with my independent phone plan and paying my own rate. I also reminded him that the only reason I left it in the first place was because he didn't believe I was acting like a responsible adult.

I just wanted to "show him" that I can handle all my own bills like a "real" adult, unlike others in my family he used to complain about.

But, this father was brazen.

He repeatedly inquired about it over the following months, as it would be significantly less expensive for him.

But I kept bringing up how much he disliked my relatives who "refused to mature," and how he wanted me to not be like them because of his "gift" on my birthday.

I continued with it because, although I could have access to more data that I "could" utilize, the lack of sarcastic messages about being a data hog was more than worth the cost.

Was the father in the wrong this time? Should the son have forgiven him and rejoined the family plan? Let's check what Reddit users are saying about this situation.
